A Good Different

As a student attending college for the first time, saying goodbye to family and friends (and even your dog) is hard. Packing your things into the family vehicle, you look back at the house you’ve always called home and know that the next four years will be very different.

However, change can be a good thing – actually it can be a great thing!

College will be your home for the next four years. Here are some tips to help you adjust to college life.

Make Your College Dorm Your Own

One of the ways to make your new location feel more like home is making your dorm feel cozy and a personal space that’s uniquely you. However, it’s also important to know the rules around room selection.

Another thing – stay organized. Yes, make your dorm room your personal oasis but also remember that this space will also be a place to study. So, maybe don’t fill the room with flashing lights.

Establish a Routine and Good Habits

Forming comfortable routines and habits take time. It is best to establish these early, during your first couple months of college.

Whether that’s exercising before class, getting into a regular sleep schedule, or meditating ahead of exams – find opportunities that help your overall well-being as your academic success depends on it.

Make Friends and Get Involved

When you get to college, it might be your best chance ever to make new friends.

Whether you’re coming from a big or small city (or from another country), many of your peers will have different lived experiences. Be open to learning more about where they are from, what their interests are, and why they chose Miami University just like you.

While your roommate will absolutely be someone you get to know, make sure to check out the hundreds of clubs and organizations that will welcome you with open arms and provide you opportunities to meet new people.

These are your opportunities to make the most of your college years.

Gain Support and Keep in Touch with Loved Ones

No matter your experience, change can be hard.

If needed, seek help from professors, mentors, student counseling services, and peers. It might also help to keep regular communication with loved ones back home. They’ve played an important role in your life. Keeping in touch by chat, phone, or video has never been easier.
