What To Expect At Orientation

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Whether you went to a private school or a public school, whether you were a student-athlete, leading clubs, working long hours, or figuring things out as you went, we are so excited that you are here.

No matter what you want your path at Miami to include now and in the future, it all starts in one place: with orientation.

For some students, Miami was always the goal. For others, it showed up later in the process. And for some, it might not have been the plan at all. But just like there are many ways to get here, there are just as many ways forward, into jobs, graduate school, new cities, new countries, and opportunities you probably haven’t even thought about yet.

Miami ends up being both of those things: a place where people arrive, and a place they leave ready for what’s next.

And orientation is where that all begins.

So what is orientation actually like?

Once you register (register here if you haven’t yet), you might be wondering what you’re really walking into.

It’s your first real introduction to how things work here, and your first chance to start making Miami feel like yours.

College is more than classes. It’s figuring out how you want to live, who you want to be around, what your days look like, and what direction you’re heading. Orientation is where you can start testing that out.

Building your schedule

Yes, you’re going to leave orientation with your fall classes picked out. But you’re not doing it alone.

An academic advisor is there to walk you through everything: what you need for your major, what makes sense for your path, and even options you may not have considered yet.

Take in more than just academics

Orientation isn’t only about your class schedule, it’s also your first look at everything outside the classroom.

You’ll hear from students who are already here; how they got involved, what surprised them, and how their plans changed once they arrived.

You’ll walk through campus, learn about campus involvement, and learn about centers and resources you didn’t even know existed yet. And sometimes, that’s how it starts, one conversation, one table, one random stop during orientation that turns into something bigger.

And if you don’t find your thing right away, that’s completely normal. Miami also hosts Mega Fair at the beginning of each semester, where even more clubs and organizations show up ready to meet you.

No two orientations look the same

Depending on your interests or background, you might go to different sessions throughout your orientation program: honors, student-athletes, specific academic programs, and more. It’s designed that way so what you’re hearing actually fits where you are right now.

Make it count

Orientation moves quickly. You’re meeting people, taking in information, walking across campus, and trying to make sense of a lot at once. Talk to people you don’t know, ask questions, sit next to someone new and say hello.

Because orientation isn’t just about building a schedule, it’s your first real step into building your life here.

The start of your Miami story

This is just the beginning, you’re starting to map out your path, but it won’t stay still. It’ll shift, change, and grow in ways you can’t predict yet. And eventually, it’ll lead you somewhere beyond Miami.

No matter what you’re feeling, whether excited, nervous, or everything in between, everyone else is starting right where you are too, you are not alone.

Welcome to Miami.
