Thanksgiving Reflections: Fall Memories at Miami University

Reflecting on past fall semesters, I’m reminded of cozy memories. The cool breezes call for comfy clothes, with hands wrapped around pumpkin-scented drinks as orange leaves crunch underfoot on the path to class. These moments bring back some of my favorite memories on Miami’s campus, where I found a home away from home.

A friend and fellow junior at Miami, Tyreke Farquharson, once described the campus’ beauty, saying, “I’ve never been in a place that looked like this. I felt like I was being transported into another time, but I was still in the present day.”

Pumpkin Painting Party with MAP

Last year, I attended the Pumpkin Painting Party, hosted by Miami Activities and Programming (MAP). On a cool weekend in Central Quad, pumpkins and paint bottles were laid out on the MAP table, creating the perfect environment for creative relaxation.

Another friend and I stared at the pumpkins, trying to figure out what would look best on round canvases. We decided that food items would be easiest, so I painted a donut, while she opted for a watermelon design. After a full week of classes, creating some festive decorations was a nice way for us to unwind.

Homecoming

In addition to Miami’s smaller events, there are larger traditions like homecoming

It’s a major highlight of the season, where alumni, current students, and athletes come together to celebrate school spirit through events hosted by student organizations, Greek life, and the university. And, of course, the tailgates and football games add to the excitement.

One of my standout memories from homecoming was the dance hosted by the Black Student Action Association (BSAA). I attended during my first year, and I felt grateful for the experience because it really enhanced my sense of belonging at Miami. The vibrant atmosphere, elegant silk outfits, engaging music, and elaborate decorations made it a truly special night.

Ice Cream Making – with Roommates

What better way to embrace the fall season than by making desserts?

Recently, my roommates and I decided to whip up some homemade vanilla ice cream while enjoying a cozy TV show. It was one of those spontaneous nights that turn into a core memory — laughing when the first batch turned out too runny, debating which toppings to use since we only had cereal and granola, and finally enjoying the perfect batch in our living room.

Miami has gifted me with wonderful friendships and several events to enjoy. So, as the temperature drops, find ways to have fun, stay warm, and let someone know you’re thankful for them.
