In the spirit of World Mental Health Day, it’s time to focus on well-being and to identify any mental health barriers.

The holiday was founded in 1948 by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). For decades, WFMH has continued their efforts in raising awareness about mental health struggles. 2024’s theme is: “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.”

So, how can you as a student take part in this? Check out the resources below!

Student Counseling Services

Any student enrolled at Miami’s Oxford campus can utilize student counseling services.

Whether you’re looking for short-term individual counseling, group sessions, or other  options like dog therapy, Miami helps you navigate the academic year. To schedule an appointment, check out these options

If classes get overwhelming, when social struggles arise, or you just need someone to talk to, there are many resources here for you. Plus, support is available around the clock through the H.O.P.E. Line at 855-249-5649 and the Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Campus Care

For a more informal approach, Campus Care is an excellent option. Students can discuss any tense or negative feelings they’ve been dealing with regarding personal challenges, current events, or global concerns.

Students meet with a mental health professional in a convenient setting. These clinicians are there to have a casual conversation, just to hear about anything that’s been on your mind.

A fan-favorite at Miami, dog therapy is provided throughout the entire academic year.

A hug or kiss from a sweet puppy will definitely provide some comfort during stressful times. This program helps students improve their quality of life and build a sense of companionship.

Therapy Dog Day Schedule

Location: Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness Building, Room 2002

Regular Hours:

• Monday: 2-3 p.m.

The university also offers Classroom Connections, which is a way for students to connect with classmates as well as faculty. Finally, here are just a few great places to mentally unwind on campus:

  • The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (CSDI) offers a welcoming space for reflection and community support.
  • The Recreation Center offers a variety of opportunities for physical activity, including access to the aquatic center and gym equipment.
  • King Library has plenty of quiet spots for reading and studying. Or, you can chill on a bench by Upham Arch and soak up all of the beautiful campus scenery.

You don’t have to face mental health challenges alone. Invite a friend from Miami to explore these options with you.
