MUFD: A Night of Fashion, Community, and Confidence

Walking in a fashion and design show sounds fun and exciting, but what people don’t always see are the nerves that come before stepping on stage. There’s pressure to represent your designer well, to carry yourself with confidence, and to bring something unique to the runway.

Taking the First Step

In my final year at Miami University, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and audition for the Miami University Fashion and Design (MUFD) show. I tried out during the fall semester, not fully knowing what to expect. I remember walking into Armstrong wearing all black, surrounded by so many other students also hoping for a chance.

When it was my turn, the room was almost completely dark, except for a couple spotlights on the stage. My number was called, I was grouped with a few others, and just like that, it was time to walk. In that moment, all I could do was trust what I had learned from bootcamp and previous shoots: show the judges personality and poise.

The Wait and the Win

After auditions, the waiting period felt long — months long. But when I finally received the email welcoming me to the Icon Class of 2026, I was beyond excited! It felt like I had stepped into something completely new, something creative, challenging, and meaningful.

From there, months of rehearsals led up to the show on April 25. This year marked the 20th annual production, with the theme Allure — a celebration of beauty, confidence, and community. The scale of the show was incredible, featuring 22 designers, 87 models, and 23 assistants, all supported by a 15-member executive board. With an audience of over 2,000 attendees, it was clear how much this event meant to the Miami University community.

I also asked another model and assistant, Taylor, about her favorite moments.

“My favorite moment this year with MUFD was getting the opportunity to assist the modeling directors and help all the other models perfect their walk. It is truly so amazing to see people gain confidence and love themselves purely from just coaching them through their walk. I can’t wait for next year!”

From Rehearsals to Runway

Leading up to the show, we participated in photo shoots and worked closely with makeup artists and creatives who brought each look to life. Getting to connect with people from different backgrounds and hear their stories added another layer to the experience. My makeup artist, for example, shared her journey as an Aveda cosmetology student and how the show was a completely new opportunity for her.

Show day itself was thoughtfully planned. From morning yoga sessions to time spent getting ready backstage, there was a real effort to make sure everyone felt comfortable and supported. There was a mix of excitement and nerves in the air but also a strong sense of community.

The Final Walk

Then, the moment came. The lights, the music, the energy, it all happened so fast. Once I stepped onto the runway, the nerves faded and adrenaline took over. It became less about being perfect and more about being present.

For me, this experience was about more than just walking in a show. It was a reflection of growth and pushing myself to do something that once felt intimidating and embracing it fully. It was also a moment to recognize how far I’ve come and to celebrate stepping into new spaces with confidence.

Having friends and family there to support me, including some I hadn’t seen in a while, made the experience even more meaningful.

I’m incredibly grateful to MUFD for the opportunity to be part of something so creative, collaborative, and impactful. It’s an experience I won’t forget, and one that I hope continues to inspire others in the future.
