Applying to Miami University: Why Showing Your Love Matters

October 10, 2025 | admin

Applying to college can feel like putting together a giant puzzle. And while your grades and test scores are key pieces, there’s another factor that can give you a significant advantage: Demonstrated Interest.

At Miami University, we conduct a holistic review of every application. This means we look at the complete picture of who you are and what you can achieve. But with over 40,000 applications in a given year and a pool of applicants who are highly academically prepared (the middle 50% of admitted students have a GPA range of 3.62 to 4.22!), we simply do not have room to admit every qualified student.

This is where demonstrated interest comes in.

What is Demonstrated Interest?

Demonstrated interest is how an Office of Admission attempts to measure an applicant’s genuine excitement and intent to enroll. When the applicant pool is as strong as Miami’s, showing us that you have done your research and truly want to be a Miamian can make the difference between an admit and a waitlist decision. We want to enroll students who will thrive here, and those who have shown us they’re serious about Miami are more likely to accept an offer of admission.

This is especially true for our highly selective programs, such as the Farmer School of Business and our Nursing major. With limited seats in these programs, a student’s interest level can be a significant factor in our decision-making process.

Ways to Show Miami You’re Interested

You don’t need to do all of these things. But, engaging with us in an intentional and purposeful way is key.

Visit Campus (or Engage Virtually!)

Nothing beats seeing the beautiful Oxford campus in person. If an in-person visit isn’t possible, take advantage of our virtual tours and online information sessions. And remember: If it’s not an official admission program, it didn’t happen. Visiting a friend, or tagging along with your alumni parents doesn’t cut it. Our office needs to engage with you officially. We note your attendance, so make sure to sign up with the Office of Admission

Engage with Communications

Don’t just delete our emails! Open them, click on the links that genuinely interest you, and explore the content. This engagement is a subtle but effective sign that you are paying attention, staying informed, and exploring what Miami has to offer.

Connect with Your Admission Representatitve

Your admission representative is your best resource. If you have a legitimate, specific question that can’t be answered on our website, reach out! Connecting with them at a high school visit or college fair is also a great way to put a name to a face.

Connect Your Goals to Miami

Use your application essay, personal statement, or – if you applied to multiple schools via the Common App, an email to your admission representative, to explain why Miami, specifically, is the right fit for your academic and personal goals. Mentioning a specific program, faculty member, or unique opportunity shows you’ve done your homework.

Check the “Yes” Box

On the application, confirm your interest in programs like the Honors College or Presidential Fellows Program if you are genuinely interested. Select the student organization areas that interest you as well, to show us you’re excited about your Miami life outside of the classroom.

General Application Tips for Success

A strong academic profile is the foundation of your application. Here are a few tips to make sure your application stands out:

  1. Prioritize Academics: Focus on achieving the best possible grades in a rigorous curriculum. The middle 50% of admitted students typically have weighted high school GPAs well above 3.5.
  2. Highlight Involvement: We use a holistic review process that considers your extracurricular involvement, leadership, employment experiences, and volunteer activities. Show us how you will contribute to the vibrant community at Miami.
  3. Craft a Compelling Essay: Your essay is your chance to showcase your personality, creativity, and character. Use it to tell us a story that isn’t reflected anywhere else in your application materials.
  4. Submit a Strong Recommendation: Miami requires a recommendation, because we believe a thoughtful letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher provides important context to your academic and personal readiness for college.

Ultimately, your application is your opportunity to tell us who you are and why you belong here. By strategically demonstrating your interest, you are helping our admission committee recognize your commitment and prioritize you for a spot in our competitive incoming class. We are excited to read your application!
