Life of a Miami Student: Set to Our Own Beat
October 3, 2025 | Natalie Janssen

With a pop culture icon’s album dropping today, I was inspired to write these lyrics. These poetic lines are about Life of a Miami Student. Whether you’re a student or someone who graduated from Miami years ago, I hope these words resonate with you, too. Love and Honor.
(PS: I also made a playlist for you with some of my favorites.)
Debut
Your first steps on campus may seem overwhelming,
The beautiful brick and wide open streets
But you can’t help yourself from dwelling
On all the beautiful firsts you’ll have, nothing competes
Your first friend, smiling from across the hall
Waiting for you for your first dinner away from home
With your new friends and your new place to roam
You may get homesick, but you know your loved ones will always call
Your first football game, cheering on your team
Maybe you know what’s going on, but maybe you just like the game-day traditions
Being in the student section makes you feel a wonderful connection
To your first moment of feeling that all your college dreams are at an intersection
Welcome home, you’ll love it here
We can’t wait to see all the beautiful things you’ll create
As a newly inducted RedHawk, you’ll always be near
To a community that supports and celebrates
Red Era
It’s a new year, a new you!
This will be the year that everything comes together,
The year when you will find your passions forever
This time around you know what to expect
And you can’t wait to get back on campus to connect
With old and new friends, planning your year to be fantastical
It’s miserable and magical
You know all too well what the college scene is like
And you still have to do a little bit of a hike
From your residence hall to your classes, but do not fret
Because this year will allow you to become your best yet
You have new experiences, including your summer internship
New clubs, classes, and friends to interact with
A season is coming for you to dwell
That all’s well that ends well, with new stories to tell
Reputation Era
You have officially become an upper-level student,
But there is still so much to happen
In your college journey here at Miami
With your amazing college family
The old you was nervous for the year
But the new you never shelters from the fear
Because you have a strong voice
And realize that not everything that breaks is broken,
And all your future plans have awoken
This year is sure to be busy
With classes, clubs, and internships, it could almost make you dizzy
But this is your year,
Your time to shine and make your priorities clear
You are in a beautiful place after rebuilding and giving yourself some grace
You are coming back as a renewed scholar, friend, and peer
So let’s just make something clear
You have just one more year, so make more memories you will hold dear
Folklore Era
It’s your last year,
Your last steps on the brick streets and hallowed halls
Your last football game, cheering on your team
Your last hangout with your friends, soaking up final nights out
All your memories slip into a daydream
August slipped away into a moment in time,
September leaves fall, surrounding your steps, purely divine
October moves through last Halloween costumes with your friends
November calls you home for Thanksgiving, once again
December you go home, knowing this will be your last Christmas break
But, January comes and you just cannot wait
February brings one last fresh start to your final semester
March marches on for one last St. Patty’s Day agreement
April blooms show us that life will continue to be better
May has come, the curtains have been drawn. It’s time to say see you later
But do not worry, for once you graduate, you’ll realize there was nothing greater
Than your time with your Miami family, cheering you on for one last achievement
You may always ponder
When you will last scream “Love and Honor”
But Miami will always be near
So no need to shed a tear
